Track Protection Officer (TPO) Learning Journey

Step 1 - Complete the TPO Pre-Assessment before becoming a new Track Protection Officer for Sydney Trains Network.

Step 2 – Obtain the courses of Track Protection Officer training program (explained below)
Step 3 – Maintain ongoing competency by completing the Track Protection Officer Recertification

Track Protection Officer Levels


Track Protection Officer Level 1 to Level 4 Programs are designed for learners who are predominantly full-time employees of Sydney Trains, as well as rail industry personnel seeking to become Track Protection Officers on the Sydney Trains Network. This program covers the required training and assessment to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to correctly protect worksites and ensure the safety of workers.

The table below outlines the process of becoming a Track Protection Officer. Each level includes face-to-face training, on-the-job learning, and a final practical observation assessment.

Entry requirements

Before you enrol in this course you must meet the following:

  • SARC TLIF2080 Safely access the rail corridor or TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor
  • Current Category 1 Medical Assessment
  • Meet the ACSF Level 3 LLN requirements for the course
  • Safety Critical Communication SSC01

Upon completing each TPO level, you will obtain the following unit of competency accordingly.
