Introduction

Clearance Handsignallers at clearance locations report the passage of rail traffic to Signallers, Protection Officers or Handsignallers at block posts.

Establishing a clearance location

Signaller or Protection Officer

  1. Tell a clearance Handsignaller to establish the clearance location.

  1. Go to the specified location.
  2. Make sure that you:
    1. stand in a safe place, and
    2. have a clear view of approaching and departing rail traffic, and
    3. have effective communication with the Signaller, the Protection Officer or the Handsignaller at an adjoining block post, as required, by telling them that you are in place.

  1. Confirm that you have established effective communication with the clearance Handsignaller at the location.

  1. Record, in permanent form, the time that the clearance location was established.

Working a clearance location

Clearance Handsignaller
  1. If rail traffic has passed completely beyond the clearance location, record, in permanent form:
    1. the identification details of the trains or track vehicles, and
    2. the time when they passed the location, and
    3. whether they showed tail lights or end-of-train markers.
  2. Tell the Signaller, Protection Officer or Handsignaller at an adjoining block post, as required:
    1. the identification details of the trains or track vehicles, and
    2. the time when they passed the location, and
    3. whether they showed tail lights or end-of-train markers.

Removing a clearance location

Signaller or Protection Officer
  1. Tell the clearance Handsignaller to remove the clearance location.
  2. Record, in permanent form, the time that the clearance location was removed.
