Answers to some of our more commonly asked questions relating to work on track.

The Network Rules and Procedures does not restrict a Signaller from authorising a movement to pass one or more absolute signals, provided that:

  • permission has been obtained from the Possession Protection Officer or delegate for the LPA, and
  • before authorising movements, the Signaller must, where possible:
    • clear fixed signals for the movement, or
    • make sure that points are set correctly for the route, or
    • tell the Driver or Track Vehicle Operator if the points cannot be set, or if the points position is unknown.

The Network Rules and Procedures does not restrict a Signaller from authorising a movement to pass absolute signals multiple times for an agreed period, provided that:

  • all parties have a clear understanding of the movements to be made, and
  • permission has been obtained from the Possession Protection Officer or delegate for the LPA, and
  • before authorising the movements, the Signaller must, where possible:
    • clear fixed signals for the movement, or
    • make sure that points are set correctly for the route, or
    • tell the Driver or Track Vehicle Operator if the points cannot be set, or if the points position is unknown.

No, in bidirectional territory rail traffic may pass starting or home/starting signals at STOP to enter or travel within an LPA on the authority of the Signaller and with the permission of the Possession Protection Officer or delegate.

Before allowing workers to enter the Danger Zone the PO must:

  • visually verify that rail traffic has passed beyond the limits of the worksite, or
  • place a Handsignaller Level 2 in a position to visually verify and confirm that rail traffic has passed beyond the limits of the worksite.
