Connected for safety: enhancing communication across the network

Improving Safety Communication Across Our Network

This Safe Work Month, themed “Safe work: every job, every day”, we're highlighting recent upgrades to how we manage safety-critical communications.

Safecomm upgrade streamlines reviews

Safecomm is the central platform for reviewing safety-critical audio communications across Sydney Trains. In May 2025, we introduced major improvements to make the system more efficient and accessible.

What's Changed

Previously, line managers had limited system access and relied on email links to review assessments. This created extra work and made it difficult to track compliance history.

Now, managers have direct access to the platform where they can view, action, and track all assessments in one place. Key improvements include:

  • A streamlined dashboard showing all assessment statuses at a glance
  • Automated reminders to support timely follow-up
  • Audit trails for better accountability
  • Ability to reassign tasks and update information after submission
  • More intuitive navigation for easier collaboration

The Impact

These enhancements have transformed the process into a seamless workflow. Managers can now reduce assessment backlogs and maintain high safety standards with greater confidence and efficiency.

“The new Safecomm functions have transformed how Safety Critical Communications assessments are managed – what used to be a fragmented process is now seamless, transparent, and far more efficient,” said Uma Yeole, Rail Safety Project Manager in the Safety, Risk & Assurance team.

“These improvements not only reduce the backlog of outstanding assessments but also empower teams to maintain high safety standards with greater ease and confidence.”
